CASE STUDY OVERVIEW
A large international drilling operation in South America faced persistent challenges caused by severe paraffin wax buildup inside drill pipe – a significant operational and capital asset, processing up to 600 drill pipes per day. To validate the solution under real-world conditions, the international drilling operation provided a heavily obstructed drill pipe that had been sitting in a yard for approximately four years and represented a worst-case scenario of paraffin buildup.
During testing, R&R successfully cleaned the severely obstructed drill pipe to an inspection-ready condition in a single pass demonstrating R&R’s ability to engineer and validate specialized cleaning solutions for severe paraffin conditions. This successful testing supported safer, more efficient and repeatable high-throughput pipe cleaning operations in demanding Oil Country Tubular Goods (OCTG) environments.
PROJECT SCOPE
The South American operation required a cleaning solution capable of addressing severe paraffin buildup inside drill pipe within demanding OCTG environments. Traditional mechanical cleaning methods such as rattling tools and heat melting were creating operational limitations because paraffin buildup repeatedly clogged and impaired these methods commonly used for internal pipe cleaning.
The project introduced several operational and engineering requirements:

The environment introduced several project challenges, including extremely heavy paraffin accumulation caused by local drilling formations, traditional cleaning methods becoming ineffective due to tool obstruction, and the need to validate performance under worst-case operating conditions. The project also required international coordination between U.S.-based testing operations and South American stakeholders, along with multilingual technical communication support throughout project discussions and evaluations.
The customer initially learned about the solution after receiving targeted email marketing materials promoting R&R’s cleaning systems. Existing industry relationships helped facilitate communication between U.S.-based stakeholders and the South American operation evaluating the cleaning challenge.
TURNKEY SOLUTION
R&R recommended its flagship SuperMax Tubular Cleaning Unit for the application. The unit supports high-pressure water blasting applications up to 40,000 PSI. For this application, R&R used a 20,000 PSI pump configuration to address severe paraffin buildup conditions.

Unlike conventional cleaning systems where pipe moves across rollers during cleaning, the SuperMax system keeps the pipe stationary while the lance system moves through the pipe. This configuration helps minimize pipe slippage while supporting consistent cleaning performance for larger and heavier tubulars.

To validate the solution, R&R requested that the customer provide the worst paraffin-obstructed pipe available for testing. The customer supplied heavily obstructed pipe that had remained unused in a yard environment for approximately four years. They then conducted live testing at a U.S.-based facility with customer representatives present during the evaluation process.
ENGINEERING AND IMPLEMENTATION
The implementation process centered on validating whether the SuperMax unit could effectively support inspection-ready cleaning performance under severe paraffin buildup conditions and real-world operating environments.

Equipment Durability and Reliability
The testing unit itself demonstrated significant long-term durability. Prior to this project, the same SuperMax unit had previously survived prolonged saltwater submersion during a South Louisiana hurricane event and later returned to operation with minimal repairs, demonstrating the platform’s durability in demanding industrial environments.
PROJECT TIMELINE
From initial evaluation through live testing and validation, the project was completed in approximately 4 months. During that time, R&R conducted testing using heavily paraffin-obstructed drill pipe supplied by the customer to validate performance under worst-case operating conditions.
